Christmas at St. John's in 2020

Christmas is a season, not just a single day.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at St. John’s were very different this year.

December 24, 2020 We had a single bilingual service on Christmas Eve, which was live streamed on Facebook. The service began with a set of prerecorded musical performances from members of the St. John’s Choir, followed by the Liturgy of the Word for Christmas Eve. We heard the Christmas story through a musical presentation of Las Posadas.  The replay videos for the choral prelude, the full service, and the sermon are shown below.

December 25, 2020 There were no services at St. John’s on Christmas Day. We encourage you to consider these options for online worship on Christmas Day in 2020.

Christ Church Cathedral, Houston
Trinity Church, New York, NY
Washington National Cathedral
Note that the Washington National Cathedral requires pre-registration to view their Christmas services.  There is no charge for the registration but donations are accepted.

December 27, 2020 is the First Sunday of Christmas and it is also the day that we celebrate the Feast of St. John the Evangelist, the namesake saint of our church.  This year, as we transition from our Interim Rector, the Reverend Ann McLemore, our Vergers will lead the English language Morning Prayer service at 10:00 AM.  We will have neither a Spanish language service nor an outdoor Holy Eucharist service on December 27.  Christ Church Cathedral in Houston, the Cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, offers a Spanish language service at 1:00 PM each Sunday.

Worship in English at St. John's
Worship in Spanish at the Cathedral

January 3, 2021, the Second Sunday of Christmas, will see us return to our typical schedule of services:
Online Morning Prayer in English at 10:00 AM,
Online Morning Prayer in Spanish at Noon, and
Outdoor In-person Holy Eucharist at 1:15 PM are temporarily suspended.
We welcome our new Rector, the Reverend Minerva Skeith, as she celebrates her first services at St. John's!

January 6, 2021, the Epiphany of Our Lord, is the traditional end of the Christmas Season.  That evening we will have Evening Prayer and an Epiphany Party - all at home via Zoom. You are invited to share the prayer service with your St. John's family and our new Rector, then "share" virtually your fancy Epiphany dessert. Wonder if we will have any trifles to show off?
